• È mediante il calore che la natura porta a maturità l'oro, così come tutti i metalli. L'oro è dunque simile a un alimento che la cuoca ha messo nel forno! Ma se in natura l'oro si forma assai lentamente, poiché il fuoco che lo cuoce è molto debole, noi, per produrre l'Oro spirituale, abbiamo la possibilità di procedere più rapidamente, aumentando il calore. Ma occorre anche stare attenti a non bruciare tutto. Si può paragonare l'apprendista alchimista all'apprendista cuoco che non sa ancora regolare il fuoco: o lascia bruciare le pietanze, oppure il calore è così debole che esse non vengono cotte a sufficienza. Per portare a buon fine la Grande Opera e formare in noi la pietra filosofale, dobbiamo accendere in noi il fuoco dell'amore, e imparare a regolarlo. È mediante l'amore che si accelera il processo; ma l'amore, come il fuoco, necessita anche di una grande padronanza, altrimenti, anche lì, si rischia di bruciare tutto. L'amore è il fuoco più terribile che esista se non lo si sa dominare: ecco perché deve sempre essere temperato dalla saggezza. La pietra filosofale è quello stato di coscienza divino che non si può raggiungere se non mediante l'amore e la saggezza.
• By means of heat, nature brings gold and other metals to maturity. So gold is like the food a cook puts in the oven! But whereas, in nature, gold forms very slowly, since the heat that cooks it is very low, when it comes to our producing spiritual gold, it is possible for us to proceed more rapidly by increasing the heat. However, we should also take care not to burn everything.
  The trainee alchemist can be compared to the trainee cook, who doesn't yet know how to gauge the heat: they either let the dishes burn, or else the heat is so low they undercook them. In order to carry the 'great work' through to a successful conclusion and form the philosopher's stone within ourselves, we must light the fire of love within and learn how to regulate it. The process is accelerated by love, but love, like heat, also requires great control; otherwise, with that too, we are likely to burn everything. Love is the most terrible fire there is, if you do not know how to master it; this is why it must always be tempered by wisdom. The philosopher's stone is that state of divine consciousness attainable only through love and wisdom.
• Durch Wärme bringt die Natur das Gold und alle anderen Metalle zur Reife. Das Gold ist also vergleichbar mit einer Speise, welche die Köchin in den Backofen gestellt hat. Doch während sich das Gold in der Natur sehr langsam formt, weil das Feuer, mit welchem sie kocht, sehr schwach ist, können wir, um spirituelles Gold herzustellen, viel schneller vorgehen, indem wir die Wärme vergrößern. Man muss aber auch Vorsicht walten lassen, um nicht alles zu verbrennen. Der Alchimielehrling kann mit einem Kochlehrling verglichen werden, der das Feuer noch nicht richtig zu dosieren weiß: Entweder lässt er die Gerichte anbrennen oder das Feuer ist im Gegenteil so schwach, dass sie nicht gar sind. Um das große Werk zu vollenden und in uns den Stein der Weisen zu formen, müssen wir innerlich das Feuer der Liebe entzünden und es regulieren lernen. Durch die Liebe beschleunigt man den Prozess, aber die Liebe erfordert, wie auch das Feuer, eine große Beherrschung, weil man sonst ebenso Gefahr läuft, alles zu verbrennen. Die Liebe ist das schrecklichste Feuer, das es gibt, wenn man sie nicht beherrschen kann und muss daher immer durch die Weisheit gemäßigt werden. Der Stein der Weisen ist jener göttliche Bewusstseinszustand, den man nur durch Liebe und Weisheit erreichen kann. 
• C’est par la chaleur que la nature amène l’or, ainsi que tous les métaux, à maturité. L’or est donc semblable à un aliment que la cuisinière a mis au four ! Mais si dans la nature, l’or se forme très lentement, car le feu qui le cuit est très faible, nous, pour produire l’or spirituel, nous avons la possibilité de procéder plus rapidement en augmentant la chaleur. Mais il faut aussi prendre garde de ne pas tout brûler.
  On peut comparer l’apprenti alchimiste à l’apprenti cuisinier qui ne sait pas encore mesurer le feu : ou bien il laisse brûler les plats, ou bien la chaleur est si faible qu’ils ne sont pas suffisamment cuits. Pour mener à bien le grand œuvre et former en nous la pierre philosophale, nous devons allumer en nous le feu de l’amour, et apprendre à le régler. C’est par l’amour qu’on accélère le processus ; mais l’amour, comme le feu, nécessite aussi une grande maîtrise, sinon, là encore, on risque de tout faire brûler. L’amour est le feu le plus terrible qui soit si on ne sait pas le maîtriser, c’est pourquoi il doit toujours être tempéré par la sagesse. La pierre philosophale est cet état de conscience divin qu’on ne peut atteindre que par l’amour et la sagesse.
