Possono sprecare la carta, rovinare gli apparecchi, rompere gli oggetti, macchiare e strappare i vestiti, gettare il cibo: troveranno di che sostituire tutto questo nei vari negozi!
È così che l'attenzione, la vigilanza e il discernimento si attenuano sempre più. Perché svilupparli, dal momento che ci sono tante persone e tanti prodotti a disposizione per riparare le sciocchezze che si sono fatte? Ricercatori, tecnici… sono tutti lì per venire in aiuto alle persone maldestre, sventate, incoscienti. In realtà, essi aiutano piuttosto i fabbricanti ad arricchirsi; per quanto riguarda invece i consumatori, questi vengono indeboliti e resi sempre più dipendenti. Non dico che bisognerebbe arrestare il progresso tecnico, no; dico semplicemente che pur beneficiando del progresso, gli esseri umani non dovrebbero trascurare il campo interiore: devono coltivare l’attenzione, la prudenza e la padronanza di sé.
So many possibilities are available to humans now, thanks to technical advances! But all these new facilities mean they expect everything to come to them and they have become careless, reckless and superficial. They can neglect their health, because there are always chemists, doctors, surgeons, dentists and so on. They can waste paper, damage machinery, break objects, stain and tear their clothes and throw food away, because there is plenty more in the shops!
And so their attention, care and discernment are becoming increasingly blunted. Why develop them when there are so many people and products to put right the stupid things they do? All the researchers and experts are there ready to come to the aid of those who are clumsy, careless and unaware. Actually, it is the manufacturers they are helping to get rich; as for the users, they are more likely making them weak and increasingly dependent. I am not saying technical progress should be halted, no, but while humans benefit from this progress, rather than neglect the inner realm they should cultivate awareness, caution and self-control.
Dank des technischen Fortschritts verfügen die Menschen heute über so viele Möglichkeiten. Doch derart viele neue Dinge, die das Leben erleichtern, führen dazu, dass man alles von außen erwartet und sich sorglos, unüberlegt und oberflächlich zeigt. Die Menschen können ihre Gesundheit vernachlässigen, denn es gibt ja Apotheker, Ärzte, Chirurgen, Zahnärzte usw. Sie können Papier vergeuden, Apparate zerstören, Gegenstände zerschlagen, die Kleidung voller Flecken machen und zerreißen und Nahrung wegwerfen: Sie finden in den Geschäften für alles Ersatz!
Auf diese Weise stumpfen Aufmerksamkeit, Wachsamkeit und Unterscheidungsvermögen immer mehr ab. Warum sollte man sie auch entwickeln, wenn es doch so viele Menschen und Produkte gibt, die alle begangenen Dummheiten wieder in Ordnung bringen? Alle stehen bereit, Forscher und Techniker, um ungeschickten, zerstreuten und ahnungslosen Menschen zu Hilfe zu kommen. In Wirklichkeit helfen sie viel eher den Fabrikanten dabei, sich zu bereichern. Und was die Verbraucher betrifft, sie schwächen sie eher und machen sie immer abhängiger. Ich sage nicht, dass man den technischen Fortschritt anhalten müsste, nein, doch die Menschen sollten, bei allen Vorteilen, die ihnen der Fortschritt bringt, auch gleichzeitig den inneren Bereich nicht vernachlässigen, sondern Aufmerksamkeit, Umsicht und Selbstkontrolle pflegen.
De combien de possibilités les humains disposent maintenant grâce au progrès technique ! Mais tant de facilités nouvelles les amènent à tout attendre de l’extérieur et à se montrer insouciants, irréfléchis, légers. Ils peuvent négliger leur santé : il y a des pharmaciens, des médecins, des chirurgiens, des dentistes, etc. Ils peuvent gaspiller le papier, détraquer les appareils, casser les objets, tacher et déchirer les vêtements, jeter de la nourriture : ils trouveront dans les magasins de quoi remplacer tout ça !
C’est ainsi que l’attention, la vigilance, le discernement s’émoussent de plus en plus. Pourquoi les développer quand il y a tellement de gens et de produits pour réparer les bêtises qu’on a faites ? Tous sont là, les chercheurs, les techniciens, pour venir en aide aux maladroits, aux étourdis, aux inconscients. En réalité, ils aident plutôt les fabricants à s’enrichir ; quant aux utilisateurs, ils les affaiblissent plutôt et les rendent de plus en plus dépendants. Je ne dis pas qu’il faudrait arrêter le progrès technique, non, mais en même temps qu’ils bénéficient de ces progrès, les humains ne devraient pas négliger le domaine intérieur, mais cultiver l’attention, la prudence, la maîtrise.
Presentemente, os humanos dispõem de imensas possibilidades graças ao progresso técnico. Mas tantas facilidades novas levam-nos a esperar tudo do exterior e a mostrar-se descuidados, irreflectidos, irresponsáveis. Eles podem descurar a sua saúde: existem farmacêuticos, médicos, cirurgiões, dentistas, etc.; podem desperdiçar papel, estragar os aparelhos, partir os objectos, sujar e rasgar as roupas, deitar comida fora: nas lojas, arranjarão forma de substituir tudo isso!
E assim a atenção, a vigilância, o discernimento, enfraquecem cada vez mais. Para que se há-de desenvolvê-los, se há tantas pessoas e produtos para reparar as asneiras que se fez? Lá estão os investigadores, os técnicos e todos os outros, para vir ajudar os desajeitados, os distraídos, os inconscientes. Na realidade, eles ajudam é os fabricantes a enriquecer; aos utilizadores, o que eles fazem é sobretudo enfraquecê-los e torná-los cada vez mais dependentes. Eu não digo que se deve parar o progresso técnico, não, mas, ao mesmo tempo que beneficiam desse progresso, os humanos não deveriam descurar a sua dimensão interior, mas sim desenvolver a atenção, a prudência, o autodomínio.

Pueden descuidar su salud: hay farmacéuticos, médicos, cirujanos, dentistas, etc. Pueden malgastar el papel, estropear los aparatos, romper los objetos, manchar y rasgar los vestidos, tirar alimentos: ¡encontrarán en las tiendas todo lo que necesitan para substituirlo!
Es así cómo la atención, la vigilancia y el discernimiento cada vez se diluyen más. ¿Para qué desarrollarlos cuando hay tanta gente y productos para reparar las estupideces que han cometido? Todos están ahí, los investigadores, los técnicos, para acudir en ayuda de los torpes, los embotados, los inconscientes. En realidad, están más bien ayudando a los fabricantes a enriquecerse: respecto a los usuarios, más bien les debilitan y les hacen ser cada vez más dependientes. No digo que sea necesario detener el progreso técnico, no, pero los humanos, al mismo tiempo que se benefician de este progreso, no deberían despreciar el ámbito interior, sino cultivar la atención, la prudencia, el dominio de sí mismos.
Сколько возможностей сейчас есть у людей благодаря техническому прогрессу! Но столько новых легких возможностей приводят к тому, что заставляют их всего ожидать извне и быть беззаботными, поступать необдуманно, легкомысленно. Они могут пренебрегать своим здоровьем: есть аптеки, врачи, хирурги, дантисты и т.д. Они могут тратить бумагу, расстраивать аппаратуру, ломать вещи, пачкать и рвать одежду, выбрасывать пищу: они найдут в магазинах, чем все это заменить!
Так все более и более притупляются внимание, осторожность, рассудительность. Зачем их развивать, если имеется столько людей и продуктов, чтобы исправить глупости, которые они совершили? Все в их распоряжении: ученые, техники, чтобы помочь неловким, ветреным и несознательным. На самом деле они скорее помогают обогащаться фабрикантам. Что касается покупателей, то они их скорее ослабляют, делая их все более и более зависимыми. Я не говорю, что надо остановить технический прогресс, нет, но чтобы с техническим прогрессом люди не стали бы пренебрегать внутренним миром и развивали бы внимание, осторожность и самообладание.
